What Exactly is Person-Centered Therapy?

The core belief of this therapy is that each person has a deep well of inner resources for understanding themselves, changing their attitudes, and guiding their own actions. In the right supportive environment, these strengths can naturally come to the surface, helping them grow and make positive changes in their lives.

In this approach, I see you as the expert on your own life and believe that you have the inner resources to understand yourself and make positive changes.

My role as a therapist is not to direct or advise you but to truly listen, understand, and reflect what you’re sharing. This type of therapy believes in your capacity for growth, healing, and self-discovery. In our one-on-one therapy sessions, it’s about helping you feel empowered to move forward in a way that feels right for you, based on your values and understanding of yourself.

The 3 Pillars of Person-Centered Therapy in Practice

  • Genuineness: In the therapy room, I strive to be genuine and transparent with you. This means I’m fully present, without any professional front or facade, so you can truly see who I am in our relationship. I share my real feelings and responses openly when it’s helpful, creating an honest, authentic connection that supports your growth and trust in the process.

  • Unconditional Positive Regard: As a therapist, I hold an accepting, non-judgmental attitude toward you—valuing you for who you are, no matter what emotions you bring, whether it’s confusion, anger, pride, or love. This unconditional positive regard creates a safe space for you to express yourself fully.

  • Empathy: I also practice empathic understanding to deeply sense and reflect your feelings and perspectives, even those you might not be fully aware of. This kind of deep, attentive listening helps me connect with your experience on a profound level, fostering a powerful space for growth and change.

When a person feels truly accepted and valued, they begin to develop a more caring attitude toward themselves. Being deeply listened to helps them tune in to their own inner experiences, gaining a clearer understanding of who they are.

Over time, this acceptance and self-awareness lead them to become more authentic and aligned with their true feelings. In this way, they become their own source of growth, finding the freedom to be their full, genuine self.

“Healing is not linear. Take your time integrating these reflections. If any thought resonates or brings up emotion, give yourself permission to pause and breathe.”
